Welcome

Welcome to my baby blog.

Here I will post most of my baby/family related stuff.

A bit of background:

I am 32 years old and have been married for 1 year and 4 months (and a few days - yes we are still counting). I am currently 13 weeks pregnant with our first child, the due date is 9th October 2009, this baby has been longed for and prayed for throughout our marriage.

My husband and I are over-joyed to be expecting a child and I suspect that I will be blogging a lot about baby stuff over the next 6 months (or next few years). As I know that not everyone who reads my regular blog is likely to be interested in my baby-blabber I decided to start a new blog to have an outlet for this side of things.

One of the things that I intend to blog about here is baby/child-related expenses (watch the running total on the right-hand bar), - we are all told that it is so expensive to have children and I will be testing that theory here by declaring pretty much everything related to the "cost of children". I admit that I am biased and will be doing my best to prove that it is possible to have a budget-baby. I know for a fact there are people who spend less than we are likely to spend, however this is about my baby not theirs and I wish to show that it is possible to be reasonably frugal when bringing a child into this world. Of course with this being my first child I might find that my ideologies are totally un-realistic, - in which case I will blog that too.

So to start with here is a little break-down of my maternity wear situation so far (and yes I am already showing and no it is not twins).

While I was off sick from work at about 10 weeks I was able to spend some time considering my maternity wardrobe (potential) needs and I discovered eBay and bought a maternity dress through there (£0.99 + £3.00 postage = total £3.99) and I bought a nice linen skirt from Blooming Marvellous that was reduced from £36.99 to £6.99 (the postage cost £4.95 on top bringing the total to £11.94). As soon as I found out I was pregnant I bought a maternity skirt from a charity shop (the only maternity wear I have ever seen in a charity shop in 16 years of charity shopping) - I didn't dare wait in case it got sold £3.50.
I have bought a "bra-extender" which is basically a piece of bra elastic with hooks and eyes on it that can be used to extend the width of a bra (not the cup obviously but it has bought me some time) - I don't want to buy too many different sizes but to wait till I am at my maximum pre-birth size or as close as I can comfortably get before buying maternity bras (obviously I am only using the non-wired type of bra for this purpose) (cost: £3.20). I have also bought some "button-hole" elastic (3m total: £1.60) for possible adaption projects if I find nice clothes in larger sizes (
fantastic tutorial here) or for making my own.
I will also very busy adapting my current clothing for maternity wear, but that is another post.

Total for this post: £24.23

  1. what the midwives recommended to me during my recent pregnancy was to start wearing maternity bras at about 4.5-5 months. which i totally didnt do at all with my first.

the ladies in the bra shop recommended going one band size and one cup size up. so if you usually wear a 32c, for example, you buy maternity bras in a 34d. the band size im not sure i agree with - all my bras now sag around, and i wish i'd simply got bra extenders. but the cup size idea, OH YES. they may feel too large before bublet is born, but once the milk comes in that extra room is essential.

wish i'd thought of ebay for buying mternity wear.

  2. I was measured in a BH shop at 7 months but they were totally off about the one size larger band size. Luckily, I'd only purchased two rather inexpensive ones. I was re-measured at the hospital after delivery and was told that rarely does the band size change and you need the right band size to minimize backpain; most BHs come with three hook positions anyway even if you need a bit of extra length. The cup size jumped several sizes though. I bought nursing bras straight away instead of buying maternity BHs. There is a difference. Anita is an excellent brand if quite pricey.
